Copland

Appalachian Spring

"The quintessential sound of the American frontier, ending in a beautiful Shaker hymn."

Originally a ballet commissioned by Martha Graham in 1944. It captures the hopeful, pioneer spirit of a young couple building a farmhouse in Pennsylvania. It famously incorporates the traditional Shaker melody "Simple Gifts" into a glorious set of orchestral variations.
